英会話入門で覚えた語句・表現

昨日の英会話入門で覚えた語句や表現をご紹介します。




your home away from home

第二の我が家


スキットでは、Here it is. Your home away from home for the next six months（これから先６ヶ月間の我が家ですよ。）という形で使われています。リズさんがトシコさんに、（ホームステイで）これから滞在する部屋を案内しています。




I couldn't ask for more.

---

これ以上は望めません。


部屋を見て「素晴らしい！」と言って感動したトシコさんが発した言葉。「最高」ということですね。


A: I'll take you to a musical and dinner next Saturday.

B: I couldn't ask for more.

といった文脈で使えます。


また、couldn't は better と一緒に次のような文脈でも使えます。

A: How are things with you.

B: (They) couldn't be better.


さらに、次のような言い方もできます。

A: I couldn't care less about Mike.

B: Don't talk like that. He's a nice guy.

I couldn't care less about ～. = あんなやつどうでもいいよ

言葉の練習


全文は There's a TV. Good for language practice.（言葉の練習にうってつけのテレビがある。） です。

practice には可算・不可算、両方の形がありますが、language practice の場合は不可算扱いで -s が付かないんですね。

to communicate with ～ by email

～とＥメールで連絡を取る


全文は、Then I can communicate with my husband everyday by email. です。

「連絡を取る」「連絡する」という場合、他に色々な言い方があると思いますが、とりあえずシンプルな communicate with ～ を覚えておくのが良さそうだと思いました。




I'm worried about ～

～のことが心配

トシコさんは I'm worried about him.（私夫が心配で。）と言っています。誰かのことを気に掛けているときは be worried about ～ が使えますね。




be in for ～

---

～することになっている

全文は Your in for an adventure.（あなたにとって冒険ですね。）です。リズさんの言葉。

この be in for の使い方と意味を、ホストの高本先生がアシスタントのゲイリーさんに次のように聞いています。

Could you tell us the meaning and usage for "be in for sth"?


これに対してゲイリーさんは次のように答えています。

"To be in for sth" means "to be sure to experience sth" or "certain to get sth or have sth."

For example, "you're in for a surprise." means "you're sure to have a surprise." "You're in for some fun." means "you're certain to have some fun."

There's also an idiom "your's in for it." Here, "it" means "trouble," "punishment" and "you're in for it." means "you're certain to be punished."

つまり、"be in for sth" は "be sure to do sth" あるいは "be certain to do sth" （きっと、必ず～するよ。）ということです。

"You're in for a surprise." （きっと驚くぞ～。）
"You're in for some fun." （きっと楽しいよ～。）
"You're in for it" （痛い目にあうからな。）

全文は Have you ever been separated from your husband?（あなたは今まで夫と離れたことがある？）です。トシコさんの言葉。

全文は、We are divorced.（私達離婚したの。）です。リズさんの言葉。
